The first settlers of the Caravaca de la Cruz area came to the region more than 100,000 years ago. The city itself was founded by the Moors as Al-Quarabaka. Caravaca is presently the fifth holiest city of the Catholic Christendom, with Annus Sanctus every seven years when ‘plenary, solemn and universal indulgence’ is granted to all who make the pilgrimage.
