The first known inhabitants of the present city called it Yakka, but archaeological evidence indicates that there had already been settlements in prehistoric times. In the 19th century more than thirty statues from the Iberian period (before the Romans arrived) were found in Yecla, including the one known as the Lady of Yecla.

Interesting Facts
- Yecla is a wine region: the oldest bodega found in Yecla dates back to the first century AD,
and was in use until the 15th century
- Originally, the many furniture makers in Yecla were also carpenters, but specifically
barrel makers for the famous wine of the region.
