1873 AD
After a more than 50 years' unstable period in the history of Spain, the first Spanish Republic is proclaimed in 1873, lasting only two years. The restoration of the monarchy comes with Alfonso XII.

1873 AD
In 1873, the garrison at Cartagena arose against the First Spanish Republic and formed the independent Cartagena Canton. Since they had the best part of the Spanish Navy, they cruised the Spanish Mediterranean trying to bring them to Cantonalism. The Federalist Spanish government declared them a pirate fleet, encouraging foreign countries to chase and sink them.

1886-1931 AD
Alfonso XIII was the grandson-in-law of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. During his reign Spain lost its last colonies in Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines, several wars in north Africa, and endured the dictatorship of Miguel Primo de Rivera.

1887 AD
The first train in the region of Águilas was built by the English company “The Great Southern of Spain Railway.” The line ran from Lorca to Águilas via Baza.

1898 AD
Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines and Guam were lost to the United States in the Spanish-American War. Spain's colonial possessions were reduced to Spanish Morocco, Western Sahara and Equatorial Guinea.

1913 AD
The oldest football stadium in Spain is in Águilas and is called El Rubial. It dates back from 1913.
