1st century AD
The architectural jewel of Cartagena, the Roman Theatre, is founded: carved marble parts are imported from Rome.

Nowadays it is in the process of being excavated. It is considered to be one of the most important theatres in Spain.

415 AD
The Vandal tribes sack Cartagena.

429 AD
The Visigoths force the Vandals from the peninsula into North Africa.

710 AD

After the death of the Visigoth King Witiza in 710, the Visigoth lords did not want to be ruled by his sons. They asked the Moors for help with this war… a decision that would forever change the history of Spain.

711 AD
The Umayyad Muslims come in aid of the Visigoth Lords as requested, but then liked the area and decide to stay… for over eight hundred years, until expelled by the Catholic Kings in 1592.

713 AD
Tudmir pact. The Muslim troops enter Murcian soil. After fighting Visigoth count Teodomiro, they sign the Tudmir pact, based in mutual tolerance and good relationships. The Moors also get to rule seven Murcian cities.

779 AD
During the rule of Teodomiro’s son, the region had become a home for Moorish rebels. Abd al-Rahman I invades and brings peace to the area, making it a province of Al-Andalus (modern Andalusia).

825 AD
Abd al-Rahman II founds the Muslim city of Mursiyah, originally the Roman settlement of Murtia.

929 AD
Revolts start again in the area. Abd al-Rahman III is now Caliph (king) of Cordoba and re-conquers the area.
